Window blinds are just one of the helpful and harmless things that civilization has invented to live well and comfortably, manage our immediate environment, and make our dwellings beautiful and attractive. Long slats of hard material are strung together in overlapping rows. When fully extended, the slats lie flat. They are then effectively closing the window from too much light, cold and air. It is also possible half open the blinds. A cord is used to control this mechanism. Pull the cord and a ratchet type lock disengages; raveling or unraveling the slats. Nudge the cord in one direction, and the blinds lock at the point you have chosen. These also have mechanisms for opening and closing the individual slats, great for controlling light and maintaining privacy.
