A roller shutter door is made of a hinged system of panels or bars. These bars or panels are quite long horizontally, but the vertical height is much shorter in proportion. A series of many bars or panels are hinged together to create doors that are opened by raising them overhead. On the inside of the buildings (above the doors), sit boxes that hold the rolled up panels. Sometimes, these boxes are visible, though in the cases of stores and boutiques, these boxes are often built into the ceiling so that they are not able to be seen. The larger doors typically use a motorized system for opening and shutting. This is due to the weight of the doors and the danger that would be presented if a person were to try to operate this manually.
Buildings are usually structured to accommodate these doors during the design process. Some buildings, however, are converted for use in one type of business to use in a different type. In these instances, renovations will be made so that a roller shutter door can be used. For instance, a building that was at one time owned by a telemarketing firm probably had no uses for doors such as these. If this same building was then sold to a drop shipping company, they would need large doors such as these to accommodate forklift access and to assist in the ease of loading materials.
Some types of places where you might see a roller shutter door include shopping malls, mechanics shops, arcades, storage facilities and the backs of most commercial buildings. In shopping malls, large open entrances are more inviting to the customer. It feels more comfortable to walk into an open front store as you are strolling along than it does to squeeze through a typical thirty-six inch opening where you might run into a person coming out. Open store fronts also increase sales as the customer has a wide view of the available products. When their eye catches something of interest, they are drawn to walk in and check it out. Once it is in their hand, they are more likely to purchase it. Mechanics need these doors to bring vehicles into the bay so that they can service them. Arcades have children in and out all of the time, so a roller shutter door allows easy access. As far as storage facilities and commercial buildings, trucks need to be able to back up to the entrance and large items often need to be brought in and out of the facility.
Overhead doors provide many benefits to businesses. They increase productivity because of the ease of use, they provide access to products and they are also very secure. Stores often use the variety with bars so that security guards can easily see that no one is in the store after hours. Placement of the roller shutter door is important to both the business owner and the customer. Colors are widely available, as are different styles and sizes, so the configuration chosen by the business can be individualized.
